Many factors account for what it means to be healthy. The meaning of wellness goes beyond our physical and emotional well-being. Although one might want to classify ‘health’ into a single component, it’s really a set of factors that contribute to the overall well-being of a person.
It is known health is not a one size fits all equation. It takes a lot of commitment & determination to keep up a wholesome lifestyle. But the biggest question here today is WHY should we prioritize OUR health before anything & anyone?
Well, besides the fact that we all want to feel comfortable in our own skin, being healthy consists of more than just looking and feeling good. By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, we can be an example for those around us too. If you are a parent like me, you get to educate your kids on the importance of healthful living. Not only physically, but mentally & spiritually as well, which is not an easy task.
Personal health is made up of 5 main aspects; physical, emotional, social, spiritual & intellectual. None of these areas should be neglected to be considered ‘well’.
- Physical wellness entails eating healthy, exercising for at least 30 minutes three times a week, getting enough sleep every night, and avoiding excess drinking & drug use.
- Emotional well-being is sustaining a positive mindset when running into problems, seeking professional help if needed, and uplifting your vibes even when you do not feel like smiling.
- Social health is having a healthy social life by getting involved in your community or in things that interest you. It is balancing your relationships while recognizing when it’s time to leave one that is dragging you down.
- Spiritual wellness is setting aside time for yourself to breathe, relax, and unwind daily. To find a quiet space and meditate, so you can contemplate on your life and analyze circumstances you might be going through. To keep faith in something greater no matter what you are dealing with, and to ground yourself by reconnecting with nature!
- Intellectual wholesomeness is keeping up with current world events, although not allowing them to influence you with fear. It is keeping an open mind when learning new things, as well as reading books yearly to feed your brain.
